Who should join?

Endurance athletes or those people who are aspiring to become one! Runner's Edge of the Rockies is a group training program for people of all ages, speeds and experience. Over 1,000 people have gone through our training program. We are social, supportive and through our training program, many members have completed their first full or half marathon, set PRs in everything from 5Ks to Ultras, qualified for Boston, competed in relays and Ironmans, won their age group in the marathon, changed their lives, and made fantastic friendships along the way!
top

Can I still join if I don't want to do a full or half marathon?

Yes - While we do encourage members to have a specific race or goal in mind to help focus their training, we welcome all runners and walkers. Once you run with the group a few times, you might even catch the marathon bug!
top

Do you coach walkers?

Yes we do! As our namesake implies, we are a distance running program. However, we do have a dedicated walking coach to support our walking group, and also support and coach members utilizing the "run-walk" method. Our walking members typically set their goals on participating in half marathon events.
top

What full and half marathons do you train for?

It's simple. Which race would you like to run? You pick the race and we'll get you there! We train members for everything from the Paris Marathon to the St. George Ironman! Whatever your race goal, Runner's Edge of the Rockies will customize a training plan to help you reach your goal.
top

Should I wait until I'm in better shape to train with the group?

Not at all! Since our program is designed for runners of all abilities, you can build up your miles with the group according to the schedule we provide for you. We do recommend a base of 2-miles when you start, however.

I am visiting Denver. Can I run with your group?

Are you the group with the yellow signs?

Yes, that's us! You may have seen our yellow route markers, chalk arrows and aid stations out in your neighborhood on Saturday mornings, or even some of our friendly runners cruising by!

Program Logistics

Where do you meet and run?

Everywhere! We have more than 100 marked and mapped long run training routes throughout the Denver Metro area so that your training runs are varied and help prepare you for any race course you're targeting. We run on a variety of terrain and surfaces to maximize your training and get you fully prepared for your race. We've been scouting, mapping and marking routes for years and have some of the best locations to run in the Denver area... and we're always adding more! As a member you'll have access to the schedule of long run locations for each Saturday in the session.

What time do you start?

Typically, our Saturday runs begin just after sunrise, from 6:30am to 8:00am depending on the time of year. We start our runs early (and on time) so that you can have optimal training conditions and get on with the rest of your weekend. We also offer a 30-minute "early start" option during the Spring and Summer/Fall Training Sessions for those members who need to start their runs a bit earlier.

Our Tuesday morning & evening speed workouts begin between 5:30-6:00am & 6:00-6:30pm, depending on the time of year. Speed workouts usually last 1-1/2 hours.

Boot camp meets in the evening and usually starts at 6:00pm.

How far do you run each week?

Our courses are setup for you to run between 2 and 24 miles depending on what is on your training schedule. One of the great benefits of Runner's Edge of the Rockies is that you can train for whatever race you want. Because of this, everyone may be running varying distances each week depending on his or her specific training schedule that we provide as part of the membership. In order for members to run together and also get in the miles they need, we set up our group runs as "out and back" routes. These routes are setup with aid stations every 2 miles (think water and Gatorade, plus the occasional sugary treat!). Speed training distances also vary depending on your target race.
top

Do you run year-round?

You bet! We run year-round with the exception of the weekends between each of our Training Sessions. Our program is broken into seasonal "Training Sessions" which follow the primary marathon seasons and allow people to take a break when they need to, or run year-round with the group if they want. The sessions are as follows:
  • Spring: January - May
  • Spring Base-Building: April & May
  • Summer/Fall: June - October
  • Winter: November - January

Do I have to make every group run?

No - While consistency is important in training, we understand that everyone has various commitments and may not be able to make each week's run. So when you do have to miss a group run, you will still be able to stay on track with your mileage by following your customized daily training schedule or checking in with us.
top

If I miss the first run can I still join?

Absolutely - we have people joining every week. While we encourage everyone to sign up early to get started on their training, we accept new members at any time during the year. We also offer one complimentary group run for prospective members who would like to experience a group workout first before signing up. To learn more about the complimentary group run click here.
top

Can I run with my dog or baby jogger on the group runs?

Unfortunately, we do not allow dogs or kids to run with us. While we love dogs and kids (and have both), we do not allow them out on the group runs for safety reasons.
top

Will everyone be faster than me?

No! We have members of all ages, speeds and running experience who run with us: Sub 3-hour to 6-hour+ marathoners. Our multiple pace groups will ensure that you are training at the correct pace, and have other members to run with.
top

What are pace groups and how do I determine which group to run with?

Since part of training properly is to run your long runs at an appropriate pace geared toward your goal finishing time for the marathon or half marathon, we have organized pace groups which are led by experienced pace group leaders to help everyone start out conservatively enough.

It is the job of the pace group leaders to shoot for the appropriate splits for the first several miles, which will improve your run for that day, and overall training throughout the session. For example, if your goal finishing time for the marathon is 4:00, then you would run with the 4:00 pace group, assuming this goal is reasonable. The coaches will consult with you regarding the appropriate pace for you, given your previous experience in races and fitness level.

I'm hoping to get faster. Can I start with one pace group and then move up?

Nothing makes us happier as coaches than to see our members improve, so yes, you can certainly switch pace groups. Conversely, if you are recovering from an injury or feeling that a pace group is too fast for you then you are welcome to move back a group. The bottom line is that you consistently train at a pace that is safe and appropriate for your current fitness level and goals. Our pace groups are non-competitive, and experience has shown that members training with the correct pace group are more likely to accomplish their race goals.
top

Do you run in inclement weather?

We will do everything we can to host the run, unless conditions are just unbearable or unsafe (heavy rain/snow/hail, lightning, unsafe/slick footing, etc.). Because you may get bad weather at your races, training in bad weather does help prepare you for anything on race day. If the weather reports are poor on the days leading up to the run, we will E-mail and post information on the website to keep everyone informed.

Why train with RER?
There are other running groups in Denver - Why should I join this one?

Runner's Edge of the Rockies will provide you with all of the organization and support that you need within a group setting to achieve your distance running goals. This includes detailed route maps for each Saturday run, fully-stocked aid stations with water and Gatorade, a variety of routes in and around Denver, personal coaching, and camaraderie with friendly members of all abilities. We have members training for their first 5K and members who have won their age group in the marathon, and everyone in between!

Many other running groups are focused on training members for a specific race. As a member of Runner's Edge of the Rockies, you enjoy the benefit of choosing whatever race you want as your goal, and we'll provide the detailed plan to get you there. We have a very welcoming and supportive atmosphere - Runner's World Magazine named us "Denver's Home Town Help" in their July 2005 article on America's top-25 running cities. Click here if you want to read more buzz about us.

Unfortunately, I just don't have the time to become a full member but would like to run with the group when I can. Is this an option?

We do offer a pay-per-run "drop-in" training option for individual training runs. Please note that it does NOT include the rest of the membership perks. If you're trying to weigh the options of joining as a full member or just running drop-in, keep in mind that the Saturday runs comprise just one part of the member benefits. If you think you'll make 50% of the Saturday runs and want to maximize your training experience, then the full membership is a better option. For more information on our drop-in plan click here.
